It's been a while...

Yep, I haven't updated this blog since before the 2019 season. I'll blame my newborn daughter. She's quite the handful. She does not sleep. I repeat, SHE DOES NOT SLEEP.
Picture
Been busy with fantasy football and sports betting as well. It's been an up and down season for me. Made the playoffs in 10 of my 25 leagues. It's been a struggle, hopefully I end up with at least some money when all is said and done.

Also entered the Westgate Supercontest and Circa Sports Million. My picks were utter crap in the contests. But I've actually done ok beating the Vegas closing numbers. Hitting on about 55% of my bets. Not very good, but I'll take it. Season is not yet over, so we'll see how we do.

Listen to "Inferno Fantasy Football Podcast August 2019" on Spreaker.
My latest draft on FFPC. Picked from the 8 spot, started with Davante Adams, took Joe Mixon in the second round. Devonta Freeman somehow fell to me in the third round. FFPC is TE-premium, got Jared Cook, Kyle Rudolph, and Jack Doyle. Maybe I reached for Courtland Sutton.

Hope you're listening to my live podcast for this draft right now too!

Bought more dyanasty orphans and a way too early redraft

6/3/2019

Summer is upon us! We are getting closer and closer to Fantasy Football season! In just a couple short months, we will all be knee deep in preparing for our drafts. It certainly does not hurt to start your preparation now. It's time to start researching and mocking, mocking, mock drafting. The more knowledge you have, the bigger of an advantage you will have over your opponents.

Lately, I've been knee deep in dynasty leagues. I bought three orphans over on Fulltime Fantasy (formerly Scout Fantasy), to add to my one on dynasty team on FFPC and the two I'm running on KFFSC. Here is a sample of what I have to work with in one of these leagues:
Picture
I also have completed drafting one redraft team, the Big Valentine league in the KFFSC; which I hate. It does pose a good amount of upside in my opinion, but those upside players will be playing on possibly bad teams. I drafted a couple of Buffalo WR's and ended up with a Detroit Lions stack (Stafford, Marvin Jones, Hockenson, Riddick). We'll see what happens:
Picture
Lastly, my Fantasy Baseball teams have sucked so far this summer. I have not completely given up on them yet. But I am doing more Fantasy Football prep. That's totally fine with me.

I Joined a Dynasty Startup!

5/1/2019

Hey all! Sorry for not posting or making any podcasts lately. Just been very busy. Also really bummed about the Vegas Golden Knights losing in the first round of the NHL playoffs. My fantasy baseball teams are not doing so hot either.

But it's ok! It's already May, time to start thinking about Fantasy Football now! I went and joined a Dynasty startup league on Fulltime Fantasy Sports (formerly Scout Fantasy). There's still room in the league, so you can join too. Contact me on Twitter @ff_inferno and I will let you know which league I am in.

Here are my Top 10 Dynasty Startup Tight End Rankings as of 5/1/19:
1. George Kittle
2. Zach Ertz
3.Travis Kelce
4. Hunter Henry
5. OJ Howard
6. Eric Ebron
7. David Njoku
8. Evan Engram
9. Trey Burton
10. Vance McDonald

TE thins out really quick! I like rookie TE TJ Hockenson in Detroit, but I like him more as a TE2 in a startup draft at this point here in the early stages of this fantasy football season.

Sorry for the non- fantasy football post, I wanted to post my NFBC Cutline baseball draft results on here. Not all of the picks shown (42 each draft), only the first 10. Teams are best ball, and not doing very well right now. We'll see how they end up at the end of the baseball season.

Patiently waiting for the NFL Draft.....

How To Pick Out A Dynasty Orphan Wisely

2/23/2019

Every year, there are dynasty owners that decide to cut bait on their dynasty teams. It kind of makes me sad that they leave, or orphan, their teams. But we cannot judge these owners as life dictates what we can or cannot keep up with, and dynasty fantasy football is just a teeny tiny part of the grand scheme of life.

That leaves these dynasty orphan teams available for those who just cannot get enough! You can find dynasty orphans on just about any paid fantasy football platform, like RTSports, MyFantasyLeague, DataForceFF, Scout Fantasy, and FFPC. I actually just bought a dynasty orphan on FFPC.
Picture
How did I go about buying this reclamation project in particular? Like everything else in life, it is an evaluation process. Here is what I look for in a dynasty orphan:

1. Youth - The point of a having a dynasty team is to field a contender year after year. You want younger players who are consistent point producers that will be on your team for at least the next three years. Although they can help, you should avoid buying teams with too many aging veterans. My rules of thumb (most people actually) regarding age are running backs should be no older than 26, and wide receiver should be no older than 28. Unlike the running back position, it's ok to have a quarterback over the age of 30 when looking for dynasty orphans to buy.
2. Lots of draft picks - Many times you have dynasty orphans where owners mortgage their present for the future, trading assets for future draft picks. These owners sometimes trade away too much,  then end up losing for at least a couple of seasons then end up getting rid of their team because they get tired of losing. They are duped by the sexiness of having draft picks. Draft picks are the bright new shiny things that have that magnetic attraction. People are just drawn to draft picks. Experienced dynasty owners know that draft picks, high or low, don't always pan out. They also know that draft picks are easily the most trade-able asset because of that magnetic attraction.
3. Playable players - Again, draft picks don't always pan out. You still need players to fill out your lineup, preferably the younger, consistent point producers mentioned earlier. Filling out your roster with consistent VETERAN point producers won't hurt either. You still want to win games, and championships, all while developing your dynasty team to consistently win for your duration of ownership of the team.
4. Star players who are coming back from injury - Usually, players who have an injury history scare me off. But sometimes players coming off injury the prior year can help you win right after you purchase an orphan. One dynasty orphan I bought back in 2017 had Todd Gurley and Keenan Allen, both were injured the season prior. Those two led that team to a championship that year, and a playoff run in the 2018 season. I might have been extremely lucky that season; but it can happen to you also, as long as you take into consideration the talent and team the injured player is on before you invest in a team with injuries to star players.

I've been playing dynasty for the past six years now. I've bought, sold, and started up dynasty teams. I've won champions with dynasty orphans, and I've dumped dynasty orphans that were absolute garbage that I should not have invested in the first place. Dynasty orphans are just like any other successful reclamation project, it takes patience, persistence, and pure passion to win.

Guess who the newest NHL correspondent on FantasyPros.com is! Yep, it's me! I know, I know, this is not about fantasy football. But I am also a HUGE Vegas Golden Knights fan. I get to write VGK (and other teams) news updates on FantasyPros for their NHL news page. Thanks to Blaine Blontz and FantasyPros for giving me another outlet to display my enthusiasm for fantasy sports. Catch my work at https://www.fantasypros.com/nhl/ tplayer-news.php

2018 Week 17 NFL Against The Spread

12/28/2018

So I know that this is and will always be a Fantasy Football blog. But I'll bet you all did not know that I worked in a couple of Vegas sportsbooks during my college days. I worked as a ticket puncher/lead cashier. Now that that the Fantasy Football season is pretty much over (with the exception of playoff leagues, leagues that play into week 17, and dynasty research), I'm feeling pretty burned out. My year in review post will be coming soon. I may even join a Fantasy Baseball league or two next year. But I've recently turned to sports betting again. I bet on pretty much all sports - College and Pro Football, Baseball, Hockey, College and NBA Basketball, UFC, even EPL Footabll (soccer). I'll probably start using this blog to post my bets. I'm not a complicated sports bettor, I am starting with a small bankroll and mostly make straight bets rather than exotics like parlays and teasers. Anyway, here are my NFL Picks against the spread for Week 18 NFL:

BILLS -5.5  WINNER
GIANTS -5.5  LOSER
PACKERS -8  LOSER
BUCCANEERS +1  LOSER
TITANS +3.5  LOSER
(BRUTAL!)

Again, these are just my opinions and are posted for entertainment purposes only. I'll be posting more picks and more fantasy football soon. See you next year!

QB Dumpster Fire

7/24/2017

Yesterday, the Pluto division of #SFB7 completed its draft. I feel that my roster is pretty solid except for my QB situation, which looks to be a dumpster fire. Good news is, Prescott and Bortles have shown the propensity to run under pressure, which may lead to first down points. Hopefully some of the others emerge as NFL starting QB's. I might have to work some major waiver wire magic to be competitive. Wish me luck!

Live blogging #SFB7

7/10/2017

With the coming and going of a busy Fourth of July weekend, it is time to put maximum time and effort into fantasy football leagues. I've drafted a few MFL10's (and a couple of MFL10 2x's too) but have not put in much time into Fantasy Football, until now. We can't say it's too early for fantasy football at this point of the year anymore!

I've got some major things upcoming this season, including defending my KFFSC title and doing consulting work with FantasyFootballKing.com. My first major draft this year is #SFB7, a prestigious 720-team league commissioned by Scott Fish, a heavy hitter in the fantasy football community. A who's who of fantasy football analysts and tweeters are in this league. It is a true honor to participate in this league.

720 teams you may ask? Yes, the league is divided into 12 divisions of 5 separate leagues; a total of 60 12-team leagues. You have to win you league, then your division, then compete to be champion of the whole 720 team enchilada. The divisions and leagues are named after Disney characters; I was placed in the Pluto league.

Teams started off drafting this morning (see picture below). I'm drafting with some great analysts in this league, I may as well throw in the towel now. But we'll see what happens.

I'm thinking I threw the first curveball in this draft, taking Melvin Gordon at the 1.05. This is a reach according to current ADP, but I really like Gordon (and frankly the whole Chargers offense) this season. A big scoring difference between #SFB7 and your typical leagues is the point-per-1st Down. Gordon was behind the big 3 RB's in that category, but he was up there with 82 total first downs. I think he will improve on that this season. He will be a top 5 RB.

Other than my Gordon pick, this draft has played out according current ADP (http://fantasyadhd.com/sfb/). With my second pick at the 2.08, I quickly snatched up Jordan Howard. I usually don't go RB-RB to start a draft, but scooping up Howard there is an ADP value. He is being taken earlier in the second round according to current ADP. Howard also had 82 total first downs last season.

So where do I go next? Most likely QB (superflex) or TE (2.5 points per 1st down), depending on who's there at my next pick. We'll see what tomorrow brings.

The 2016 season was a successful one!

1/2/2017

The 2016 Fantasy Football season has now come and gone. My season was one heck of a roller coaster ride, with its share of ups and downs. Luckily, there were were more ups than downs :)

My crowning achievement was winning the Kentucky Fantasy Football Championship (KFFSC). It's a national contest with hundreds of players. Some entrants also had more than one team in the contest. I entered the championship round with my one single bullet, I only entered one team. That bullet hit the mark! I've been invited to Louisville, KY to draft as the reigning champion.

I also made the playoffs in the Southern Bluegrass Fantasy Football Championship (SBFFC) and Scout Fantasy Online Championship national contests. I've also got wins in two ancillary leagues in the FFPC and won four leagues on RT Sports.

Didn't play in as many home leagues this year, only three.  I made the playoffs in two of those three leagues, and brought home the championship in one of those leagues.

While I'm bragging at the moment, I can't forget all the leagues I played in that I didn't win. I can honestly say I only bombed (finished bottom quarter) in two leagues this season. I had an over .500 W-L record in most of my leagues.

Yay for me!  All this winning also has lead to my new venture in Fantasy Football Consulting!  I will now be helping fellow fantasy football players drafting their teams this summer.  It's almost like a dream come true!  More details to come, please go over to fantasyfootballking.com to check it out!

Bolting Up The Depth Charts: Tyrell Williams is the Chargers #1 WR

10/26/2016

The San Diego Chargers are trending up after last week’s victory. Their hopes were dwindling after their 1-4 start. Phillip Rivers lost his #1 wide receiver in Keenan Allen earlier this season, he is still on pace for another 4,000 yard passing season. He has proven that the Chargers still have an explosive offense that will keep them competitive. Even after the loss of Allen, San Diego has enough depth in their receiver corps to make a playoff run.

So whom is Rivers going to throw it to? The Chargers also lost another receiver, Stevie Johnson, in the preseason. It was expected that the Chargers’ big free agent offseason acquisition, Travis Benjamin, would take over their lead wide receiver duties. However, Benjamin has not come close to putting up that expected production and has even caught the injury bug lately. San Diego still also has holdover veteran boom or bust receiver Dontrelle Inman catching and dropping passes from Phillip Rivers.

It is Tyrell Williams unexpectedly emerging as River’s #1 wide receiver. He has five or more catches in 4 out of the last 5 Charger contests. In the Chargers last game against the Atlanta Falcons, Williams played 66 out of 75 offensive snaps and was targeted 10 times. He turned those 10 targets into seven receptions and 140 receiving yards. However, Williams did not fare too well against the outstanding Denver Bronco secondary. He was targeted only three times in that game, and he caught all three of them for 28 yards.

But the weekend before that, he blew away the Oakland Raider secondary to the tune of five receptions and 117 yards while scoring a touchdown. Williams has two 100-yard games this season so far, and is the Chargers’ second-leading receiver with 31 catches for 526 yards. That projects to more than 1,000 yards receiving over a 16-game season. He still only has two touchdowns this season, but Rivers should find him for more red zone looks going forward. So far this season, Williams has set or tied season highs in targets, yards, and catches.

Prior to this season, Williams was an undrafted free agent and came into this season with only 2 NFL receptions. He grew up in Salem, Oregon and came out of Western Oregon University where he was labeled as a prospect showing superior size and speed. He wowed scouts working out with former Oregon State quarterback and Los Angeles Ram Sean Mannion at the Beavers’ Pro Day in March of 2015, and was signed by the Chargers. Williams made the roster, and his first NFL reception went for an 80-yard TD against the Denver Broncos.

The Charger’s schedule lightens up somewhat after their week 8 tilt versus that tough Denver defense again. Four of their following 7 opponents rank 19th or worse in pass defense. Tyrell Williams is a young player who will get better as he plays more snaps. If Williams plays up to his potential, he and Rivers may lead the San Diego Chargers into the 2016 NFL playoffs.

April Showers May Bring December Flowers

4/11/2016

We are here in the middle of April and I've already completed seven MFL10's and eight drafts, both live and slow, on RT Sports. Some may view this as overkill; I've even heard this early drafting be called a "sickness".

Why is is fantasy football in April viewed as negative? Sure, we are still a few weeks away from the NFL Draft. Heck, the NFL schedule isn't out yet. In this period of the year, there are many unknowns. Fantasy football drafts at this time of the year are huge gambles.

But that is exactly why we do it. The thrill of YOUR unknown sleepers becoming big NFL stars and carrying you to a championship. Seeing YOUR rookie picks blossom into functional NFL players. You are pretty much picking YOUR guys, and it makes us happy.

The whole process of drafting is simply so much fun for me. Looking at ADP lists from different websites, looking for value in each and every draft pick, and taking "my guy" before anyone even thinks about him, all adds to the fun and satisfaction of drafting early in the year.

Are the teams we draft in April going to be winners cashing out in December? Are they worth the investment? Maybe, or maybe not. But for right now, I'm VERY HAPPY with the teams I've drafted so far. I'm sure other folks like me with "the sickness" are also very happy with the teams they drafted this early. Happiness makes the world go around :)

Next stop, NFL Draft. See you then! -- Mark, @ff_inferno

Round 9 Ravens

3/24/2016

Something peculiar just happened in my latest MFL10 draft.  In the ninth round, within the first five picks in the round, four of them were Baltimore Ravens.
Picture
Are the Ravens a sleeping offensive juggernaut with Joe Flacco coming back? Are these players overrated or underrated? Were they drafted too early or too late? We will not know the answers to these questions at this point in the year, hopefully the situation plays out well for those who pick them.

Here are my quick takes on those ninth round Ravens:
Javorius "Buck" Allen - Second year RB with very high upside playing behind aging Justin Forsett. Forsett was injured part of last season, and Buck made a decent, but not spectacular, showing in his absence. I probably would pick him at this spot also, depending on what RB depth I have going into the pick.
Kamar Aiken - He was thrust into the WR1 position with Perriman and Smith out with injuries last season. He held his own, doing well even without Flacco at QB. He will serve his fantasy owners well this season as a WR3 or WR4. He'll probably be picked in rounds 8-12 in upcoming drafts.
Breshad Perriman - He was injured for his entire rookie year, but was highly regarded before he was drafted. He'll be back this season, and will contend for a starting spot this season. To be honest (TBH lol), I am not sold on Perriman because he has not proven anything yet on the field in the NFL. He does offer some upside though, and might be worth the risk as a ninth round or later pick.
Steve Smith - This was MY Raven pick in this round. Smith is old for an NFL player, and he was also injured last season. But I still LOVE his toughness and ferocity. He renounced his "retirement" to come back and play this season. I believe Steve Smith comes back to the Ravens as their WR1, and will lead the Raven receiving corps in all receiving statistics.

Also, I love the Markus Wheaton pick in this ninth round with Martavis Bryant out for the season for smoking weed. Thanks for reading, let me know what you think, and follow me on Twitter @ff_inferno!

Analysis of my latest draft

3/11/2016

Earlier this week, I finished drafting my first FFPC Online Satellite team.  These leagues are draft only (Best Ball) and PPR with TE premium (TE's get 1.5 pts per reception).  These drafts take a while, as they are slow snake drafts (10 hours for each pick) lasting 28 rounds.

I had the second pick, and I think I did well.  Please see the picture below for my draft board.  I really love my WR corp, starting with OBJ as my first pick. My RB's are not top shelf, but I'm still happy with the upside they offer.  I might be reaching with where I drafted my TE's, but again, each of them have their upside arrows pointing up.  I waited until the 11th round to pick a QB, and picked the best ones available with my 12th and 13th round picks also.  My trio of Stafford, A. Smith, and Osweiler should provide decent production.  My favorite picks of this draft were in the 16th and 17th rounds.  I feel that Dwayne Allen and Jamison Crowder are STEALS at those spots.   My not-so-favorite pick, is kicker "Sea Bass" Janikowski because he is an older, very old fat guy.  Hopefully he is still the Raider's kicker this season, and not a wasted draft pick.

It's only March, and we just finished the NFL Combine and started 2016 Free Agency.  We can't predict what happens between now and the end of the football season.  But I think this team has a great chance to win me some money come December.

A Whole New Season (starting with MFL10's)!

2/27/2016

Wow, this is my first post in a while. Last season (2015) was a really tough one, more losing than winning. Mostly discouraging, and not very encouraging. I tried really hard not to lose, but my efforts were fruitless. I couldn't even make anything up with DFS, as it was outlawed in my state of Nevada.

So I am going to try different approaches this season. Unfortunately, I've made the decision to not participate in any high stakes leagues. But I am keeping my dynasty leagues, and will participate in more mid-stakes leagues.

I lost some of the enjoyment I felt for Fantasy Football from last season's experiences. But it's time to adapt and overcome. I'm already excited for what challenges the 2016 season will bring in Fantasy Football. And that excitement starts with MFL10's.

MFL10's MFL10's MFL10's MFL10's MFL10's!
Who isn't excited about MFL10's? I just completed my first one yesterday. And just my luck, I had to draft from the dreaded 12-hole. You can see the results from this draft in the picture below.

Here's a quick self-analysis of my first draft: Meh.

I waited to draft QB's late, and went after younger RB's who all have opportunities to start on their teams.

I'm really banking on Jordy Nelson coming back strong from his ACL surgery. I took him early in this draft and paid big for him in one of my dynasty leagues. You can see my sleeper WR's at this point in February (Coleman and Sanu), as I drafted them really, really late.

But yes, I don't have really high expectations for this team. That's ok, it's February and it only cost $10. I'll have more MFL10 analysis coming, but right now I have to sign up for my next league :)

FLORIDA - A State of Fantasy Upside and Wonderful Vacations

7/21/2015

Earlier this summer, for our wedding anniversary, my wife and I took a 7-day Caribbean cruise out of Miami, FL.  We also took a week to explore the Florida Keys after the cruise.  We loved every second of our Florida vacation.

I also love Florida for Fantasy Football.  The state has three NFL teams with emerging offenses, the Miami Dolphins, Tampa Bay Buccaneers, and Jacksonville Jaguars. I may not take any of their players in the early rounds of Fantasy Football drafts, but I will be taking them in the mid-to-late rounds. Each team boasts players with good amounts of upside. Here are my opinions of players from each team in the great Sunshine State of Florida:

Miami Dolphins - Ryan Tannehill was a Top 10 QB last season and can duplicate that performance with the weapons around him this season.  RB Lamar Miller is in a contract year, he can make mucho dinero in the offseason with high-level performance.  The Dolphins also drafted Smurf-Turf RB Jay Ajayi, who can audition to be their starter next year with a good showing.  WR Jarvis Landry came on strong late last season and ended up with over 80 receptions.  He can certainly catch as many or more balls this season, which makes him fantasy gold in PPR leagues.  The Dolphins also acquired WR Kenny Stills and will function as Tannehill's deep field threat. They also acquired TE Jordan Cameron.  I will probably avoid Cameron in drafts, simply because of his past concussions.  Concussions are no joke.

Jacksonville Jaguars - Nobody really likes the Jaguars.  Everybody will tell you they suck. I will not tell you they suck, but will say they are an emerging offense.  Their offensive core does not have much experience, but does have talent.  Second year QB Blake Bortles has been working on skills that will hopefully make him a better QB this season.  I'm hoping he blows up as I have him on a couple of Dynasty teams.  The Jags drafted RB TJ Yeldon, and he will be their starter.  I also have Yeldon on a couple of Dynasty teams.  One of my deep, deep sleeper picks from this team is RB Toby Gerhart, who I've read that will be their third-down back, and will have value if Yeldon gets injured.  The Jags have a few WR's that I will take shots on in drafts.  Allen Robinson is one WR who I'll be taking in the mid-rounds of drafts if he isn't already taken. The hype train has been running all summer for Robinson, and barring injury, he has the potential to become a Top 10 WR.  The Jags also have WR's Marquis Lee, Allen Hurns, and Rashad Greene, who I might take (very) late round fliers on. They also acquired TE Julius Thomas, who I can still see being at least a Top 15 TE.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers - If their offensive line plays decently, the Buccaneer offense is a potential juggernaut.  I liked QB Jameis Winston at FSU.  He's a prototypical QB that will have success at the NFL level.  He's still a rookie though, so I will probably be taking him later in drafts.  Another one of my sleepers is RB Doug Martin, who I've been taking in rounds 7-9 in drafts.  He's the Bucs starting RB right now, and is on the last year of his current contract.  He needs to duplicate his "Muscle Hamster" performance once again to earn a big contract next year.  However, if he falls on his face and is a bust, the Bucs have RB Charles Sims to fall back on.  With Martin starting, Sims is a great change-of-pace, third down RB with exceptional receiving skills.  At WR, the Bucs start Mike Evans and Vincent Jackson. Both are tall and athletic and have the skills to catch whatever their quarterback throws at them. Evans is being drafted early in drafts, and both of them have Top 20 WR potential.  Lastly, the Buccaneer player I will try to get in every draft is TE Austin Seferian-Jenkins. He did not put up big numbers as a rookie last season, but he was also injured. Barring injury, ASJ is a Top 8 TE.

Welcome to the INFERNO Fantasy Football blog!  I may look young (see the "About" page), but I played in my first Fantasy Football league way back in 1995. I started playing in mid/high stakes FF leagues five years ago and even won one (2014 FFWC #8). I also won the 2016 KFFSC. In 2018, I was Top 5 in the SBFFC. This blog will document my thoughts, experiences, and exploits in the realm of Fantasy Football. I've also been starting to do sports betting more in 2019. Any picks I post are for entertainment purposes only. Thanks for reading!
